Business and Strategy

The purpose of this track is two-fold - one angle helps you to understand the advantages of Drupal from an organizational leadership angle and the other is to highlight the great Drupal sites and projects you're working on and to show what's possible. These sessions are business focused, and will be non-technical.

Integrating mentoring into an open source community that welcomes and values new contributors

This session will talk about how to get integrate mentoring into all the different layers of an open source project. This involves a change in the whole community which treats new contributors with respect, knowing they have something valuable to contribute to the project.

Using the Drupal community as an example, we will look at the many ways mentoring fits into all the experience layers of an open source project.

Customer obsessed or fail

Customer obsession is easy to talk about but hard to do. It requires redesigning your company's practices, marketing engagement technology and data to achieve greater customer retention, customer enrichment and customer advocacy. And it requires skilled resources that understand both marketing needs and technology capabilities.

Tracy will share insights on how leading firms have reinvented their approach to collaborative marketing and tech management planning, implementation and management.

Drupal 8 for Non-Developers

Drupal 8 is right around the corner and unless you have either been involved in Code Sprints or even know what a Code Sprint is then this session is for you.  I will take us on a journey of all the scary things that Non-Developers fear and bring us out into the world of Developers lingo, thinking and strategies.  After this session you will be able to overcome your Octophobia and walk and talk Drupal 8 with the best of them.

Session includes:

Strategies for Determining an Open Sourcing Policy

The decision to open source a set of code is easy when the owner of that code is an individual, but when the owner of the code is an organization the decision is more complicated. Advance planning to clarify the organization's open sourcing goals, the procedures by which code must be reviewed prior to release, and the expectations of maintainership post-release can help avoid problems and result in greater success in the long run.

Exposing Project Management's Scary Language: The Truth About Starting a Project

You have been assigned a project, now what? Managing technical projects can be confusing if you don’t know where to start.

What exactly is a project and how do I keep it from running me instead of me running it? What’s this scope thing and why are people always talking about it ‘creeping’? Who are all these stakeholders and what do I do with them?

This session is designed to help answer those questions and discuss best practices when managing a project. During this session, we’ll cover:

From aGov to govCMS - the Australian Government's path to widespread Drupal adoption

In the past 3 years, Drupal has firmly established itself as the preferred CMS of the Australian Government. Much of this adoption was driven by policies mandating the consideration of open source technologies and website accessibility, with Drupal being publicly endorsed as meeting these requirements by the Australian Government's Chief Technology Officer.

Contracting: Interior's path to Drupal in the Cloud (v2.0)

Once upon a time (2009), a consulting group estimated that producing a new (awesome) web presence would cost a bit more than $11 million. Naturally, we didn't take their recommended path. Instead (after a few years of research, conversation and negotiation), we awarded a contract for platform-as-a-service cloud hosting and Drupal architecture for all of the Department's bureaus (10) and offices (many). We arranged for new designs and migrated to the new platform. is under construction.

The 5 Pillars of Digital Transformation

The world has gone digital and great digital experiences have changed the relationships of people to technology and citizens to government.

The role of technology has shifted to that of an effective enabler rather than being the primary focus. In the increasingly fast-paced world of technology innovation, businesses and governments are being challenged to use the latest digital technologies to provide and sustain engaging experiences and deliver information and services anywhere, anytime on any device.

Successful Requirements Gathering

Gathering requirements is equal parts art and science, and the success of your entire project depends on doing it right. No matter what project methodology you're using, there are some simple rules that can help you collect and document the right information upfront, so that your team knows what to build and your client gets what they need (not just what they say they want). You’ll leave this interactive session armed with tools you can begin using immediately to make your next project a success.
