Small Enough to be Useful, Big Enough to be Meaningful: How We’re Rethinking Content Management

Presenters: cleake

The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI’s) Smokefree.gov program helps people quit smoking every day. The challenges of quitting smoking don’t wait for a person to sit down at a computer, so NCI supports people through their entire journey using the Smokefree.gov website, social media, mobile apps and text message programs.

As Smokefree.gov moved towards separating content from layout, our team identified an opportunity to go beyond the boundaries of the website in our outreach efforts. We set out to establish a future-friendly process not only to prepare our content for distribution across multiple channels but also to deliver scientifically reviewed, personalized content to underserved populations like veterans, LGBT youth, and pregnant smokers.

Hear about how we’ve been using Drupal to put content first and get some ideas for how you can:

  • Gather together and assess ALL your content.
  • Consider where your content is currently going as well as where it’s likely to go in the future.
  • Mindfully break and tag your content into travel-size pieces
  • Leverage Drupal’s capabilities as a CMS to curate and organize your content
  • Determine when your content needs to change as well as when your back-end needs to be flexible.
