Communication Strategies for Solving Internet Problems

Experience level:
Beginner
Session Track:

Business and Strategy

The purpose of this track is two-fold - one angle helps you to understand the advantages of Drupal from an organizational leadership angle and the other is to highlight the great Drupal sites and projects you're working on and to show what's possible. These sessions are business focused, and will be non-technical.

Speaker(s):

The key to finding solutions to common problems encountered in invisible construction projects is simple: better communication. In practice, it can be tricky and requires a lot of nuances. I’ve found that framing these problems into 4 main categories of problems has been a helpful first step to strategizing communications for solving.

In my 7 years of experience launching over 300 websites on a Drupal platform to managing enterprise & large non-profit projects, I’ve seen a lot of ‘problems’ and been asked a lot of questions posed as problems. In this session, I’ll explore examples of each type of problem & communication strategies for talking through these different types of problems when the arise:

1) Internet

These are problems that either the internet hasn’t solved yet or contrary to how the whole scene has been architected.

“Why does the custom font not look exactly the same on my favorite browser - IE7?”

2) System (Drupal)

These are problems related to the specific system & I’ll be focusing on Drupal examples.

“I should press save & my content should appear instantly for all users on the internet immediately”

3) Business

Learn how to identify when something is a business problem. These ones are fun because sometimes content management systems can really help solve these.

“We want divisions in our department to be able to update the site but we need to make sure someone can approve all content.”

4) People

At the core of many ‘problems’ is shared humanity & learning how to work with people of different types effectively is critical to digital success.

“My item is really important and it needs to be on the homepage and I’m not afraid to send really angry emails about it every day”
