When estimates go wrong for the right reasons

Experience level:
Beginner
Session Track:

Business and Strategy

The purpose of this track is two-fold - one angle helps you to understand the advantages of Drupal from an organizational leadership angle and the other is to highlight the great Drupal sites and projects you're working on and to show what's possible. These sessions are business focused, and will be non-technical.

Speaker(s):

Estimates are the cornerstones of good project planning. A constant struggle exists to determine accurate estimates, weighing all of the known factors and considering the impact of the unknowns. Nothing feels better than starting off with estimates you can count on, but what if they are actually not accurate at all? In this session I will discuss why I find that wrong estimates can be as valuable as accurate ones.

Some of the estimation topics to be explored in this session

  • Determined by expertise and experience
  • Detailed analysis and discovery
  • Repeatable processes
  • Determining a confidence level in estimates
  • Over-engineering solutions
  • Learning the estimation curve

Through these I will discuss examples of when these topics lead to estimates that were not accurate and how it was for the best.
